I am a dog person, through and through. I grew up with dogs, my husband had a dog when we got married, and we had another dog when our boys were young.
Not long after my youngest was born, we had to find a new home for that dog. My husband was traveling a lot, I had three young boys, and a high anxiety rescue dog that was reverting to bad street dog habits. I wasn’t able to do it all.
We haven’t had a dog for at least twelve years. I’ve wanted one on and off over the years, and the boys have asked for one countless times over the years. My husband and I talked and always decided that there were more reasons against than for getting a furry companion.
Then came 2020. Travel was cancelled. Suddenly we were all home. And my oldest was determined.
We started actively looking for a rescue. There were not many to be found. We applied for several and never heard back. We weren’t giving up, but it wasn’t looking good.
And then the Goddess intervened. A friend posted a picture with a box of puppies. I commented that I wanted one. My friend reached out to me privately to let me know that several of the litter were still available! The best part was that they were mostly border collie. I was in.
We picked out our girl (the boys were already spoken for) from pictures, and chose a name for her (Mika, pronounced Mee-kah). We went to visit her when she was about a month old, and definitely fell in love. It was a definite plus that we also got to visit my friend.
Countdown to puppy day was agonizing, though the agony was eased by pictures and videos that my friend sent (thank you, Kat!).
This weekend, we brought her home. The entire family has been smitten with the new baby. It’s definitely different having a teething puppy around the house, making sure we get her outside to potty, and getting her integrated into our routines. Still, I wouldn’t trade her snuggles for anything.
Blessings,
Mary
