Persephone is a Greek goddess of transformation and change. She is both the Maiden of Flowers, and the Iron Queen of the Underworld.
Persephone is the daughter of Zeus, king of the Gods, and Demeter, the Goddess of Grain. She was quite sheltered as a child. Growing up, she spent her time helping her mother tend the earth, and making beautiful flowers.
Eventually, she caught the eye of Hades, the Lord of the Underworld. He brought her to Erebos, the land of the dead, to be his wife. She could have been a victim in this situation, pining for her lost life above ground. Instead, she stepped into her power and became Queen.
I have a series of blog posts in which I examine The Rape of Persephone, its interpretations and meaning. Part 1 is here, Part 2 is here, and Part 3 is here. She is a favorite goddess of mine, and has tremendous wisdom to share.
