We All Need Help Sometimes

Life can get really overwhelming. Especially in the face of the current media saturation regarding the pandemic – there’s a lot of fear out there.

It's OK to get help

This fear can exacerbate depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. We are concerned for our own health and safety, as well as the health and safety of our friends and family.

I’m not going to harp on the recommendations from authorities (okay, just one – wash your hands!). If you are noticing a decline in your mental health, whether it is because of virus panic or not, please get some help.

Some of my closest friends and family see counselors regularly. I see a counselor whenever I need it. And one of those times is now.

Also, the media keeps talking about “social distancing”, as if we have to completely cut ourselves off from contact with friends and family. I hate that term. I prefer physical distancing. Just because we can’t share physical space, doesn’t mean we can’t stay connected. Churches (including mine) are finding ways to continue to have our regular meetings online, with video, so that we can still support and connect with our community.

There is an old proverb (I’m not sure of the origin) that says, “The plague killed 5,000. Fear killed 50,000.” I certainly believe it given the current coverage.

Your mental health is as important as your physical health. So please, step up your mental health care, be vigilant about your mental state, and take care of yourself.

Blessings,
Mary
