What You Don’t Do Doesn’t Matter

Keeping commitments is very important to me.  And it’s something I struggle with from time to time.

Here’s a wonderful post on that subject from The Art of Non-Conformity‘s Chris Guillebeau.

Just go here and read it.

Mary

Brainwave Entrainment

In my research about meditation, I keep bumping into something called “brainwave entrainment”.  Proponents say it has phenomenal benefits, and it greatly aids in meditation.  But what is it, exactly?

Wikipedia says:

Brainwave entrainment or “brainwave synchronization,” is any practice that aims to cause brainwave frequency to fall into step with a periodic stimulus having a frequency corresponding to the intended brain-state (for example, to induce sleep), usually performed with the use of specialized medical software. It depends upon a “frequency following” response, a naturally occurring phenomenon where the human brain has a tendency to change its dominant EEG frequency towards the frequency of a dominant external stimulus.[citation needed] Such a stimulus may be aural, as in the case of binaural or monaural beats and isochronic tones, or else visual, as with a dreamachine, a combination of the two with a mind machine, or even electromagnetic radiation.[citation needed]

And what does that mean in English?

Essentially, most brainwave entrainment programs help you to move into a different state of consciousness by using the brain’s natural tendency to align with another brainwave pattern, allowing you to gain the benefits of that particular state.

So what are the different states of consciousness? There are four categories, ranging from alert to asleep and they vary by how fast the electrical waves of your brain are.  The faster the waves, the higher the frequency, and the more alert you are. (Remember the sine wave from high school?)

Sine Wave

  • Beta is when you are awake and actively engaging your mind.  This would be when you are having a conversation with someone, writing, reading or creating.
  • Alpha is when you are awake, but relaxed.  This is generally when you have taken a break from something you’ve been focusing on, or when you start to meditate.
  • Theta is when you are dreaming, deeply meditating or starting to fall asleep.
  • Delta is when you are asleep.

Brainwave entrainment programs generelly help move your brain frequency into the theta state.   What does this do for you?

The reported benefits of lowering your brainwave include:

  • Increased relaxation and reduced stress
  • Improved memory and creativity
  • Greater ability to focus and concentrate
  • Stronger intuition
  • Higher energy level
  • Fewer illnesses
  • Better sleep

A quick Google search finds lots of products out there at various price points.  There are even some you can download for free.

Looks like my next project is to find some entrainment tracks to put under my guided meditations….

Blessings,

Mary

PS.  A quick way to lower your brainwave to Alpha state is to close your eyes and “look” up about 30º. Focusing on a spot above and between your eyes helps to activate your third eye chakra, while lowering your brainwave frequency.  Cool, huh?

12 Steps to Help You to Relax, Heal & Commune With Nature

Project Meditation LifeFlow Sample

My recommendation for this week: Project Meditation’s free LifeFlow sample.

LifeFlow is a product designed by Michael Mackenzie to increase relaxation and help you move into a meditative state faster and easier.

LifeFlow® has been specifically designed using extremely precise frequencies that resonate and impact the body at a cellular level. You can truly feel your deep relaxation or meditation on a physical level, in surges of positive energy and a flow of deep heartfelt emotions.

I listened to it the other night before bed, and I had a good night’s sleep.  And I turned it on underneath my yoga DVD this morning, and it was wonderful, especially for the meditation at the end. I was able to stay more focused.

Listening to it sounds like pleasant nature sounds, but underneath the sounds are Isochronic, Monaural and Binaural tones that lead to brainwave entrainment.  What exactly does all that mean?  Stay tuned for next week’s post, as I’m doing the research to break it down.

For now, give the sample a try.  You will need to enter your name and email address, which will sign you up for another list.  The whole system is a bit pricey, but he gives away other freebies from time to time!

Blessings,

Mary

Control Issues

Hello.  My name is Mary, and I have control issues.

Not the stereotypical”EVERYTHING MUST GO MY WAY!” kind of control issues. There are some things I just don’t care about. Like the nightly dinner time conversation:

“What do you want to have for dinner?”

“I don’t know.  What do you want to have?”

But I’ve never been completely drunk, because as soon as I start feeling tipsy, and like I’m losing control, I stop. (That, and I don’t really like the taste of alcohol…) I just want to have control over my life.  I didn’t think that was asking much, really!

Apparently, the need for control leads to a lot of struggle.  And a fair bit of disappointment.  I speak from experience.  Take my guided meditations for example.  I had the idea that over my holiday break from work, I was going to get pages written for every one that I had completed recording.  There are nine of them.  It is now more than two weeks past my time off, and there are three pages up.

Why is that? Because life had different plans for me–time spent with my children, helping a really good friend, another project with a high priority to finish (meaning I was getting paid for it). And I caused myself pain by feeling guilty about not getting my website done. I still cause myself some pain about it.

But I’m getting some pretty clear messages from the Universe that it is time for me to let go of that need to control.  I need to go with the flow, and follow where I am led.  Besides getting that message during meditation, the other day the daily message on my Marianne Williamson Daily Wisdom Calendar said:

“Until your knees finally hit the floor, you’re just playing at life, and on some level you’re scared because you know you’re just playing.  The moment of surrender is not when life is over.  It’s when it begins.”

I’ve also been drawing a Crystal Ally Card each night before bed.  Three nights ago, I drew Aquamarine -Release.  The description said,

“Give away the energy of control, and have faith that the Universe will use that energy to create what is in your highest good. Allow the light of Spirit to enter and fill your body and mind.”

And then today, as I sat down to write this post, another friend needed some healing.  So two hours later, I’m now back at it, and mulitasking.

So I’m working to let go of control, and go with the flow. How am I doing that?

  1. Breathe and get centered.
  2. Tune in to my intuition, Divine Wisdom, Higher Self.  This feels like an opening of my heart.
  3. Ask for input.  “What do I do next?”
  4. Listen for the answer.
  5. Act on the message I receive.

Yes, sometimes this is a lot easier said than done.  And sometimes I completely forget to do it. Like I said, I’m working on this one. The Peaceful Woman Maui Passage has a whole day devoted to this lesson. I’m very much looking forward to that when I go back in February. And my youngest son is an awesome teacher!

Blessings,

Mary

PS. I just read my “Notes from the Universe” for today, and got a good chuckle!

Expecting “end results” – such as wealth and abundance, health and harmony, friends and laughter – in broad brush strokes, is part of the secret formula, Mary, for manifesting the life of your dreams.

Expecting your path to follow a certain route – such as writing a bestseller to accumulate wealth, having a particular someone fall in love with you, or insisting upon this idea, that diet, or the other invention to be your deliverance – is just plain messing with the cursed hows and severely limits my options… (I hate when that happens.)

Cool?
The Universe

PS. Release any expectations you may have of how you think your dreams will come true, Mary, but by all means, with every fiber of your being, expect that they will, as you busy yourself enjoying who and where you already are.

Responsibility

Many teachers and gurus talk about the importance of taking responsibility for everything in our lives.  On one level, I totally get it.  Everything, good and bad that has happened to me, all of my current circumstances are a result of choices I have made.  I understand, and I accept it.

At another level, I struggle with this lesson. Over and over again.

Here’s how that plays out in my life.

I get a great idea, or an opportunity comes my way.  I get excited about the project, and make plans for how I will accomplish it.  I get started, and then it hits me…I have three young children.

I become overwhelmed by my perceived time pressure.  Between work, spending time with my children and my husband, my journal writing, meditation and spiritual practices, home chores and the new responsibility of whatever the project of the moment is, I start to feel burned out.

I want to be Super Woman, and do it all! The fact remains that I am a mortal woman who gets cranky when I don’t get enough sleep.  Not to mention self care!

At times, I have arranged for others to care for my children while I pursue my vision/idea/opportunity.  I end up missing them, they miss me, and they start acting out to get my attention.  And, I didn’t have children so I could pass them off to someone else to raise.  While my children have never been this out of control…

Responsibility? funny picture

…there are times when my house gets a little out of control!  Like now for instance.  One is in the bath, and two are chasing each other in circles around the house.  And I’m working on this blog post.  This would be one of those Calgon moments, right?

There are so many things I want to go out and do.  So many things I want to accomplish.  And so much of my children’s lives I would miss were I to take off and pursue all those things.

I sometimes console myself with the fact that I am still pretty young, and I will have plenty of time to pursue those dreams as the boys grow older.  They are only young once, right?  Or, if I miss one opportunity now, another bigger and better opportunity awaits me.  And still I struggle with wanting to do it all. NOW!  The fact remains that I chose to become a mother, and for all my complaining, I really enjoy growing with my children.

Since this theme keeps recurring in my life, it’s obviously one of those life lessons that is going to keep coming up until I truly figure it out.  Or until they all grow up and move out of the house.  Nahhh, who am I kidding?  I will still want to do more things than I have time to do! :)

So, how about you?  How do you balance all your responsibilities?  Do you fully accept responsibility for all aspects of your life?

Take a Moment…

While doing some research for my guided meditations recently, I came across a site that I am quite looking forward to making a regular visit to:

The Life Balance Institute‘s “Take a Moment” page.

Each week on Monday they release a brief video moment, an opportunity to reflect, think and be inspired.  I can’t wait to see what nect week’s moment is!

Take a Moment, and treat yourself!

Blessings,

Mary

Take some time, and get your life in balance…

Auntie Lyn’s Raw Breakfast

Last week I mentioned my raw breakfast, so I thought I would share the recipe and some of the benefits.

This raw breakfast recipe is a very simple way to shed those extra pounds and get down to your ideal weight. My Auntie Lyn told me about it several times, but I always shrugged it off. To be honest, it didn’t sound very tasty!

Now I eat it every morning (at least when I remember to start it).  I’ve lost 10 pounds, and kept it off, without changing my diet or exercising any more than I did before. I get tons of compliments on how great I look! And it is simple.  The hardest part is remembering to start it before bed.

Here’s what you need to make your raw breakfast:
• one handful of raw seeds (I use a mixture of sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds)
• 4-5 raw nuts (like almonds or cashews)
• 1/3 cup raw oats (that’s the long-cooking oats)
Put all the ingredients in a bowl and cover with water. Soak for at least an hour, overnight is better.

IMPORTANT! DRAIN BEFORE EATING!

I try to use organic ingredients when I can, because I don’t like the thought of having extra chemicals with my breakfast.

I know, it may not sound great, but you get used to it. When I first started eating it, I threw in some dried cranberries for zip. After a month or so, I started using bee pollen instead of the cranberries. Now I sprinkle some cinnamon on it, and throw in some fresh or frozen fruit.

So what are the benefits of a raw breakfast, and why does it help you lose weight?

Sunflower Seeds

Sunflower seeds have been used throughout history to enhance energy – a great reason to have them as part of your raw breakfast! Who can’t use extra energy in the morning?

Native Americans and other herbalists have used sunflower seeds as a diuretic, for constipation, chest pain, or ulcers, to treat worms, and to improve eyesight. Recently, they have been recommended for use for people with high blood pressure or cardiovascular problems with good success.

Raw sunflower seeds are higher in nutrition than roasted and definitely better than salted seeds. Raw sunflower seeds are very high in potassium and low in sodium, a balance sorely needed by most of us these days with so many salty foods available. One cup of sunflower seeds contains more than 1,300 mg of potassium and only 4 mg of sodium. This is likely very helpful as a diuretic or for people who already take diuretics, to help replace some potassium. The high amount of oil in sunflower seeds as polyunsaturated fats, essential linoleic acid, and vitamin E is also helpful in reducing cholesterol levels and improving or preventing cardiovascular disease.

When sunflower seeds (or any raw nuts or seeds) are soaked overnight, it makes them more digestible and alkaline-forming. Essentially, soaking starts the sprouting process, or bio-activates them, and makes the nutrients more available to your body. I’ll talk more about the importance of alkalinity on another page.

Pumpkin Seeds

These are best known for their concentration of zinc and their use in the treatment and prevention of male prostate problems. Pumpkin seeds have also been used in treatment of intestinal worms. They are good source of protein and contain a good balance of amino acids. Their fat content, mostly unsaturated, is over 50 percent of the seeds.

Raw pumpkin seeds are also very high in iron, calcium and phosphorus, with some magnesium and copper. Like sunflower seeds, they also contain vitamin E and essential fatty acids, and so the two make a good mix in the raw breakfast. There is a mix of B vitamins, with niacin being the richest.

Almonds

When raw almonds are the first thing in your stomach after arising, they set the hydrochloric acid tolerance for the day, providing all-day protein digestion. When almonds are eaten first as part of your raw breakfast, they are efficiently digested since stomach acids are concentrated after the nightly fast. (If you leave hydrochloric acid alone in your stomach, the saliva and hydrochloric acid would become toxic.) In other words, almonds have an alkalizing effect on the body.

When soaked, raw almonds act as protein plus nitrogen. This protein helps your blood sugar stabilize throughout the rest of the day. Eat one almond per ten pounds of body weight, more if you want to gain weight and less if you want to lose weight.

The flavonoids found in almond skins team up with the vitamin E found in their meat to more than double the antioxidant punch. Twenty potent antioxidant flavonoids were identified in almond skins, some of which are well known as major contributors to the health benefits derived from other foods, such as the catechins found in green tea, and naringenin, which is found in grapefruit.

Oats

Low in fat and high in fibre, oats have a low glycaemic index (GI) that ensures a slow and sustained release of energy. Oats are also rich in vitamin B6, which is believed to help guard against depression. They are also an excellent source of iron, dietary fiber and thiamin. They contain antioxidants that are believed to protect the circulatory system from diseases such as arteriosclerosis, which affects the arterial blood vessel.

Soaking the raw oats, just like with the raw nuts and seeds, makes them easier to digest, and makes the nutrients more available to your body.

On top of all this, here’s what the American Cancer Society has to say about the benefits of oats:

1. Insoluble fiber’s cancer-fighting properties are due to the fact that it attacks certain bile acids, reducing their toxicity.

2. Soluble fiber may reduce LDL cholesterol without lowering HDL cholesterol. LDL is bad; HDL is good.

3. Soluble fiber slows down the digestion of starch. This may be beneficial to diabetics because, when you slow down the digestion of starch, you avoid the sharp rises in your blood sugar level that usually occur following a meal.

4. It has been found that those who eat more oats are less likely to develop heart disease, a disease that is currently widespread in the United States.

5. The phytochemicals in oat may also have cancer-fighting properties.

6. Oats are a good source of many nutrients including vitamin E, zinc, selenium, copper, iron, manganese and magnesium. Oats are also a good source of protein.

There you have it. I may not be a raw foodist, but I am sold on the raw breakfast!

Blessings,

Mary
